ESPN announced the fall schedule for its 30 for 30 film series, which includes a film that was directed by Phoenix Suns guard Steve Nash.
Nash is making his directorial debut in the film Into the Wind, which details the life of famed Canadian marathoner Terry Fox. The film, which was originally titled Marathon of Hope, premiers on ESPN on Tues., Sept. 28, at 5 p.m. Arizona time and on ESPN2 at 8 p.m.
ESPN provided the following film description:
In 1980, Terry Fox continued his fight against bone cancer with the pursuit of a singular, motivating vision: to run across Canada. Three years after having his right leg amputated six inches above the knee after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma, Fox set out to cover more than a marathon’s distance each day until he reached the shores of Victoria, British Columbia. Anonymous at the start of his journey, Fox steadily captured the heart of a nation with his Marathon of Hope. However the 21-year old BC native’s goal was not fame, but to spread awareness and raise funds for cancer research. After 143 days and two-thirds of the way across Canada, with the eyes of a country watching, Fox’s journey came to an abrupt end when newly discovered tumors took over his body. Two-time NBA MVP, proud Canadian, and first-time filmmaker Steve Nash will share Fox’s incredible story of perseverance and hope.
“I remember being a six-year-old boy and waking up every morning and rushing to the TV to see where Terry was that day,” has said. “To see him running or hobbling across our country for the spirit of community and looking out for others was something that has stuck with me ever since. To see his face hiding the pain and to hear his words disguising the sacrifice was as motivating and as educational an experience as I’ve ever had. To be able to tell this story again, to Americans who love an underdog and a story of overcoming and struggle, is something any new filmmaker would love.”

A busy Tuesday in Phoenix sports continued with the surprise announcement that Steve Kerr will not return as the Phoenix Suns general manager after his contract runs out on June 30.
The move came as a surprise considering the Suns unexpected run to the Western Conference Finals but with his contract expiring in two weeks, a move would have to come now if one was to be made. The Arizona Republic reported Kerr will remain with the team through the NBA Draft on June 24 and maintain his ownership stake.
620 KTAR reported that Kerr wanted to be closer to his family and watch his high school senior son play hoops while returning to TV. That is often a convenient excuse when a position change is made because it is hard to argue. Another thought is perhaps Kerr and Suns owner Robert Sarver had differing opinions on whether to resign Amare Stoudemire and/or for how much. Another idea is Kerr wanted more to resign as GM than Sarver was willing to pay.
Kerr’s tenure will be remembered as one that appeared to never get fully on track as Sarver imposed strict and tight budget restraints and was hands on with many personnel decisions.
Kerr was widely respected for his knowledge of the game when he took the job after serving as an adviser for Sarver after he bought he team in 2004. However, Kerr never got to fully stretch his basketball legs and the team suffered with roller coaster performances during the last couple of seasons. Kerr appeared to have the team on the right track, however the immediate future of the team is tied to whether Stoudemire returns.
Sarver said he would consider in house candidates with long-time executive David Griffin a leading option within the franchise. Whomever Sarver hires, will be the his fourth GM in six seasons as owner.
Thursday night’s Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals of the 2010 NBA Playoffs between the Suns-Lakers scored big in ratings, garnering a 20.8 rating and 34 share on TNT. In other words, one out of every three households watching television tuned in to the game.
This was the Suns’ highest rated game since May 16, 2007 when the team took on the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the Western Conference Semi-Finals (23.0 rating, 34 share).
The Suns are set to take on the Lakers in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals on Saturday, May 29 at US Airways Center. The game will be broadcast nationally on TNT. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
The Phoenix Suns surprising sweep over the nemesis San Antonio Spurs has attracted a lot of attention as evidenced by point guard Steve Nash currently ranking among the top 10 trending topics on Yahoo!
Yahoo! trends monitors the most searched topics through their search engine at a given time. There is no particular hot story surrounding Nash so general interest is behind the two-time MVP currently ranking sixth, just ahead of Tiger Woods but a few spots behind Dunkin Donuts.
Hole in space owns the top spot.
Ironically, all of these items have a connection to a hole. Steve Nash has a defensive hole in his game, the black hole in space, donuts obviously have holes in the middle and Tiger Woods … well you can fill in the hole joke there.
Tempe-based LifeLock, Inc., the industry leader in proactive identity theft protection, announced today a strategic partnership with Phoenix Suns forward Grant Hill. In an effort to continue its affiliation within the NBA and further enhance its partnership with the Suns, LifeLock will use Hill, recipient of the 2009-2010 NBA Sportsmanship Award, in various marketing efforts across multiple platforms.
In 2007, LifeLock entered into its existing partnership with the Phoenix Suns. The partnership provides many opportunities for marketing the industry leader’s well-known identity theft protection brand. With Hill as LifeLock’s new spokesperson, basketball fans that have followed Hills’ NBA career will have the opportunity to learn more about the crime of identity theft and important protection methods.
“This exciting partnership with Grant Hill gives LifeLock a great opportunity to focus on reaching more consumers with our proactive identity theft protection message,” said Marvin Davis, LifeLock’s Chief Marketing Officer. “Grant provides a strong voice behind our service that will undoubtedly be heard by basketball fans around the country.”
“With increasing threats of identity theft, I look forward to helping LifeLock build on their identity theft protection initiatives,” said Hill. “Educating consumers on ways to help reduce the risk of becoming a victim will be our focus.”
LifeLock’s marketing plans span an array of communications channels, including television, print and digital media. Hill will appear in upcoming LifeLock television and radio advertisements, as well as in print. The organization will also incorporate Hill in promotional events that will help to educate more consumers on the growing crime of identity theft.
Lifelock garnered international headlines last year for its innovative partnership with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury. As part of the deal, Lifelock had its company name put on the front of the Mercury’s jersey in place of the team’s name. The deal has since been replicated by other WNBA teams.
As the Phoenix Suns were rolling to a 119-90 win in Game 2 of their NBA Playoff series with the Portland Trail Blazers, their television rating on FOX Sports Arizona reached a level that has been seen only once before in the history of the network.
According the Nielsen Media Research, the telecast generated a 9.0 rating/14 share in the Phoenix market, which means that an average of 162,234 households watched the game. The 9.0 rating ties the highest rating ever for a Phoenix Suns game on FOX Sports Arizona, matching the same figure that was recorded when Shaquille O’Neal made his Suns debut against the Los Angeles Lakers on Feb. 20, 2008.
Further, the 9.0 rating for last night’s game is now the No. 1 all-time mark for a Phoenix Suns playoff game on FOX Sports Arizona. It eclipsed an 8.0 rating that was received for a game against the San Antonio Spurs on April 25, 2008.
Last night’s game was the second-highest rated program in Phoenix market for the entire day. At the Suns & Trail Blazers game’s peak, it turned in a 10.4 rating (187,470 households) and FOX Sports Arizona’s Qwest Suns Live post-game show did a 5.0 rating (90,130 households).
The Phoenix Suns return to FOX Sports Arizona for Game 5 of the series on Monday, April 26. The Suns Live pre-game show starts the night’s coverage at 7 p.m.

Bud Light Golden Wheat presents Smash Mouth performing on the main court immediately following the Suns-Rockets game on Sunday, April 11. The concert is free to all Suns ticket holders.
Collectively, Smash Mouth has sold more than 10 million albums worldwide. Along with their number one hits – “Walkin’ on the Sun” and “All Star” – they have consistently impacted radio with other recognizable hits like “Then the Morning Comes,” “Can’t Get Enough Of You Baby,” and a cover of The Monkees classic “I’m a Believer,” which was prominently featured on the “Shrek” soundtrack (4, Billboard Adult Top 40).
With the release of their fifth studio album – “Summer Girl” – the guys decided to part ways with their longtime label, Interscope, in order to form their own company, Beautiful Bomb Records, and put forth the lessons they’ve learned by self-releasing the new material with the help of Red Distribution (Sony/BMG). By releasing “Summer Girl” on their own, the band is making good on a decade long promise of doing things their own way.
“Summer Girl’s” first single “Story of My Life” reached the Top 20 at Hot AC radio; and the second single “So Insane” was featured on the soundtrack for the major motion picture “Zoom” starring Tim Allen and Courtney Cox.

“NBA fans in the Coachella Valley will see two of the NBA’s most popular and entertaining teams square off in the world’s most picturesque outdoor setting for basketball,” said Rick Welts, President and CEO of the Suns.
“We are pleased to partner for the third consecutive year with the NBA and the Phoenix Suns organization to bring this distinctive game to TNT,” said David Levy, President of Sales, Distribution and Sports, Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. “The outdoor game has proven to be a unique and fun experience for not only the players but also for our viewers and crew. We look forward to returning to Indian Wells in October with our NBA on TNT crew for this year’s game between the Suns-Mavs.”
Suns ownership partner and Rancho Mirage local resident Dick Heckmann said, “Not only are we proud to be bringing the Suns back to the Valley, we are excited that this event will be helping local high schools raise much needed funds at a critical time.”
On October 11, 2008 the NBA hosted the first outdoor game of the modern era, which featured a preseason showcase between the Phoenix Suns and Denver Nuggets at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The sold out event, known as the AutoTrader.com Open, saw the Denver Nuggets outlast the Phoenix Suns, 77-72. The Golden State Warriors defeated the Phoenix Suns 104-101 in the second AutoTrader.com Open held on October 10, 2009.
“We are very excited to be continuing our partnership with the Phoenix Suns in hosting the matchup,” said Steve Simon, Chief Operating Officer of the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. “With the Dallas Mavericks coming to town and more area high school basketball programs involved, this year’s game will be the best yet.”
Southern California’s Santa Rosa Mountains provide a breathtaking backdrop to the 80-acre complex that will host the event. The 16,000-seat stadium is an NBA-style arena with no roof that annually plays host to one of the world’s major tennis tournaments, the BNP Paribas Open. Fans from Phoenix who wish to attend the game can reach Indian Wells in less than a four-hour drive.
A report in Monday’s New York Daily News reports that Jerry Colangelo revealed Sunday he would consider running an NBA team again but only if he is given full control of the organization.
The paper said Colangelo would be interested in leading the hapless New Jersey Nets but hasn’t had contact with anyone in the organization.
That leads to the next question. If Colangelo is interested in an NBA return, why not to the same franchise he founded and built … the Phoenix Suns? Colangelo is currently listed as Chairman of the Suns, but that title is in name only. HE remains le
There is no doubt the franchise can use Colangelo as the team has been in a downslide since shortly after he sold the team to Robert Sarver.
Rick Welts is the current President and CEO of the Phoenix Suns, and he added the CEO title within the last year, so that creates a major issue as he hasn’t done anything to warrant losing that position. However, the opportunity to add Colangelo to the fold again would be too attractive to not consider.
The Daily News story said if Colangelo took over a franchise, he would bring Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski to lead that team. If Colangelo went to the Suns, he could also bring his son Bryan back from Toronto to serve as general manager in place of Steve Kerr, who is in the final year of his contract and reportedly has not been in talks for a new deal.
Since Sarver took over the team, fans have endured a constant loss of talented executives, players and draft picks all in the name of getting better. With a trade of Amare Stoudemire apparently a foregone conclusion, this franchise will be in the poorest shape since the drug scandal of the late 1980s.
Sarver is not capable of turning around this franchise on his own and will have to turn to someone who can right his wrongs. There are few people who could come in and make an instant impact, but Colangelo is on that short list.
Ego among other reasons will keep the Godfather of Phoenix Sports from going full circle in his career and returning to the Suns beyond a figurehead role but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth discussion.
It would be interesting to see if something can be worked out with Colangelo, so their fans can relive the famous moment from the television show Dallas when the character Bobby awakens from a deep sleep and reveals the last season of the show was only a dream.

Suns star Jason Richardson is making a donation of $23,000 to Chances for Children, a local organization that works to save the lives of children living in poverty in Haiti, to aid in the ongoing relief efforts of the Caribbean nation.
The Suns organization made an initial donation of $20,000 on January 15, which purchased over 8,000 pounds of food, formula, water, medicine and supplies.
“We are grateful for Jason’s donation which will allow us to continue our rebuilding efforts in Haiti. Thanks to the generosity of Jason and the Phoenix Suns, we have enough food to feed the children at the Chances for Children orphanage and the children who attend the village school for four to five months,” said Craig Juntunen, Chairman for Chances for Children.
In addition to food, the shipment included water purification tablets, medical supplies, cloth diapers, soaps, shampoos, toothbrushes, toothpaste and baby wipes. Over 400 pounds of charcoal was also sent to help with the cooking of meals, as many places still have no electricity or generator capability.
The Suns are encouraging the best fans in the NBA to join in the effort by making a donation to Chances for Children online at www.suns.com. Every dollar donated will provide immediate relief by supplying basic life necessities such as food, water and medicine, to those displaced by the massive earthquake that devastated the country on January 12.
Chances for Children provides the financial and strategic support for an adoption center named Crèche Enfant de l’Jèsus (CEJ) located in the small village of Ti Mache, east of Port au Prince, Haiti. The 14,000 square foot facility was created in 2003 and is currently home to 70 children. The organization provides each child with a safe and sane sanctuary to return them to a healthy state. The children are fed, clothed, bathed, developed educationally and loved while they wait for a family to adopt them.
While Chances for Children is a newly formed 501(c)3 organization the organization has partnered with a team in Haiti who have been active in the local community for years, ensuring immediate results. For more information on Chances for Children, please visit www.chances4children.org.

On Wednesday, sports blog Deadspin published excerpts from the book Blowing the Whistle by former NBA referee Tim Donaghy. Two of the blurbs contained in the excerpt confirm what many Suns fans already knew; the refs were purposely screwing them.
Donaghy details one story about how NBA refs deliberately called fouls against former Raja Bell. The former Suns forward earned a reputation as a star stopper with his persistent defense, especially on nemesis Kobe Bryant. According to Donaghy, many refs believed the fans came to see the stars score not to see players like Bell shut them down, so they would blow the whistle more often to protect stars like Bryant.
In another story, Donaghy says that the Suns didn’t have a chance in beating the Spurs in the second round of the 2007 NBA playoffs because group supervisor Tommy Nunez was working against them.
Donaghy lists a few reasons why this was the case. One is that Nunez is very active in the Hispanic community and has a lot of friends in San Antonio. Another is that Nunez, who lives in Chandler, likes being on the road, so he wanted to extend the series to go back to Texas and get out of the house. Plus, Nunez, like many other refs, reportedly didn’t like how Suns owner Robert Sarver treated the officials. Donaghy said all of these factors played into how Nunez prepared for staff meetings with referees. He said Nunez would review game tapes with the crew and point out everything Phoenix was getting away with but wouldn’t do the same for San Antonio.
“Nunez should have a championship ring on his finger,” Donaghy said.
How much of this is true and should be believed is hard to say but if someone would know about corruption within the brotherhood of NBA refs, it would be Donaghy who was convicted in 2007 for working with a professional gambler and sharing inside information about NBA games, including ones he was working.
The book was set for release next month but the NBA recently threatened to sue publisher Triumph Books who then canceled plans to release the book. However, reports state that no one fro mthe NBA has read the book and didn’t cite any specific examples of inaccuracies. It appears the league is just trying to whatever it can do keep the book from getting published.
It is unknown if Triumph will reverse its decision, if another publisher will pick it up, if Donaghy will self publish it (which is what MVP recommends) or if it will disappear altogether.
